Artist Statement
What motivates me / 2017
Performing taught me about courage. Writing emotionally charged poetry was initially a way for me to vent. When it came time to perform, I honestly wasn’t prepared for everything that came along with sharing such personal parts of myself with strangers. Performing at open mic events taught me to confront my vulnerabilities; it also taught me that I am not alone. I realized there were others that had been through the same things I was dealing with. It taught me to stop pretending to be made of stone, and embrace my humanity.

Bits & Pieces: After Therapy For Black Women is a deep dive into the myriad of emotions experienced in love, sex, and relationships. The 32 poem collection by award-winning author Ebony Payne-English expresses many unvoiced sentiments surrounding the trauma of loving, losing, and learning to love again. In this heartfelt offering, the author takes us on a journey that captures the black feminine experience from the first kiss to the first childbirth. The masterful lyrical interpretations of coming of age and nostalgia paired with the sharply penned imagery of maturation's growing pains open the reader up to Ebony's creative genius in a way that is sure to transform all who are exposed.
